Copley-Fairlawn KiwanisFairlawn Police -Drone Presentation
It was a full house at the last meeting of the month of the Copley-Fairlawn Kiwanis club. Members showed up for dinner and to hear Fairlawn Police Lt. Eric Henderson talk about the department’s drone that the Kiwanis club purchased for the department about two years ago.Henderson said the drone was put to use nearly 60 times in the past year. It was used for a number of incidents including helping to find elderly people who wandered off on their own, to checking for live fireworks landing on residential roofs during holiday celebrations. The department’s drone also was used to help track down suspects in incidents such as burglaries. Fairlawn police also provide their drone to assist other departments including Summit Metro Parks.Lt. Henderson says about five officers are currently certified to operate the drone making it on call and available to the community 24 hours a day.
Key Club Speakers
Sarah Lawrence, a co-president of the Copley High School Key Club and several of her officers attended a recent meeting of the Copley-Fairlawn Kiwanis Club. The purpose of the visit was to update Kiwanis Club members about the Key Club’s activities this school year. Another reason was to ask for financial help to support a recent Copley High School graduate who is battling a race form of cancer.
Chaz Franchetti graduated from Copley High School in 2024 and enrolled in Wright State University to study physics. Unfortunately, after his first semester, he got the cancer diagnosis. Although he tried returning to school, he was unable to go back to campus and is now solely focused on his treatment. Chaz has a long recovery ahead of him, and the Key Club is trying to raise money to support him with his medical bills.
The Kiwanis Club voted to give $500 to help the young man through a difficult moment in his life. Below is a link to the go fund me site to help Chaz.https://gofund.me/7898fe8c

Our annual Christmas Dinner was graced with lively holiday entertainment presented by the Copley High School Choir under the direction of Scott Little.
Share-A-Christmas Fundraising Campaign
Our Kiwanis Club has been proudly helping families during the holidays since 1955. In continuing that effort, we are raising funds to provide groceries and grocery only gift cards to needy families with children in the Copley-Fairlawn School District. Though you may not realize it, there are over 500 children in the district who are food insecure and a percentage of those are homeless. Last year we helped 60 families. Our goal again is to be able to give the average family $250 grocery only gift cards for our Share-A-Christmas program and we hope to be able to give more. We also will be buying dry goods and fresh produce as well as our traditional ham and a frozen pie for each family.

Special Speaker-October 2024
Copley-Fairlawn Kiwanis club president Tom Koch spoke to club members this week about a recent trip to the Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C. He started out by asking each member to read an identification card he received at the museum belonging to Rozia Grynbaum who, along with her two young daughters, were gassed at the Treblinka killing center. Then he asked them to close their eyes and imagine stacked on top of Rozia's ID card there were 5,999,999 similar cards of innocent men, women and children who were exterminated by Adolph Hitler from the late 1930's to the early 1940's. Then Tom read the following note from a survivor of the holocaust:

The officers and new members of the board of the Copley-Fairlawn Kiwanis Club were officially inducted for the new Kiwanis calendar year which began October 1. Division 16 Lt. Governor Sandy Elliott presided over the induction at the club’s regular Wednesday meeting at St. George Party Centre in Fairlawn. The officers and new board members will serve until September 30, 2025.
First Energy Akron Marathon Sept 30th
The Copley-Fairlawn Kiwanis club showed up for the running of the First Energy Akron Marathon, Half Marathon and Team Relay on Saturday, September 30th. The nine members were not there to run, but to work as volunteers to help make the race run smoothly. The Kiwanis volunteers were assigned to a relay location in Sand Run Metro Park. The club has a tradition of volunteering for the marathon since its beginning. Good work team!

How would you like to wrap your car, a van or even a huge semi in vinyl? Well, that’s what Copley-Fairlawn Kiwanis Club member Marc Yoder’s company, Yoder Graphics Systems, does as a major part of its business.
Yoder hosted club members at his facility to showcase all the capabilities of his company. He designs and prints yard signs, like the ones he does for the club at its annual May Flower sale. He also designs the flyer used to reach the parents of school children in the Copley-Fairlawn School District. That flyer is also an insert in the West Side Leader newspaper and reaches nearly 15,000 households.
But one of the most dramatic projects his company undertakes on a daily basis is applying vinyl wrapping to vehicles to identify their company and help advertise what they do. Inside his giant truck bay, a van was being fitted out with a new vinyl wrap and a huge semi-truck was in the early stages of getting fitted out with its vinyl wrap.
Before vinyl wrapping became a “thing”, companies had to have their vehicles painted. Painting, it turns out, takes more time and is more expensive. And painting is less durable than vinyl.
Marc is growing the business was established by his father, Jess Yoder, who was also a longtime Kiwanis member. He’ll son break ground on a new 2,500 square foot addition to his shop that will include two new truck bays. His dad would be very surprised to see the company today.

🌟 Inspiring Youth in Action 🌟
At tonight's weekly meeting, we had the pleasure of hearing from two remarkable young ladies, Sarah Lawrence and Hannah Roush, both entering their senior year at Copley High School. These inspiring students shared their personal stories and spoke passionately about the urgent need for research into brain diseases.
Sara, who will be the new president of the Kiwanis Key Club at Copley High School, bravely underwent life-saving surgery after being diagnosed with hydrocephalus. Hanna's father has been battling fungal meningitis. Their experiences have fueled their determination to make a difference.
To support the American Brain Foundation and fund critical brain disease research, Sara and Hanna are organizing a Movie Night at Barberton’s West Theatre on August 16 at 6:00 pm.
